Understanding Who You Serve

Finding clients for your business is a lot like embarking on a journey. You need a map, a destination, and a solid understanding of who you’re inviting along for the ride. It all starts with one crucial question: Who is it that you serve? Who does your product work for? Who gains the most by listening to and hiring you? Who do you really serve? This isn’t just about defining target demographics by GDP or market segments with the most miscellaneous income; it’s about getting to the heart of your audience’s wants, needs, fears, and dreams.

The first step isn’t asking, “How do I find clients?” Instead, ask yourself, Who am I serving? Visualize your ideal client. What are their challenges? What keeps them up at night? Where do they go to find solutions? Whether they’re active on LinkedIn or seeking out new ideas on Pinterest, knowing your client’s behavior forms the backbone of a successful client acquisition strategy.

Take Jane, for example, a boutique owner who initially marketed to everyone and saw little traction. When she realized her core audience was moms searching for unique, handmade baby clothes, everything changed. She began showing up in the places these moms frequented—blogs, Instagram feeds, and local mom groups. Instead of casting a wide net, she narrowed her focus, and suddenly, finding clients became less about chasing and more about being the perfect match.

Where Are They Spending Their Time?

Now that you’ve honed in on who you’re serving, let’s figure out where they are. Are they attending webinars, scrolling the fediverse, or browsing Reddit forums? Maybe tghe aren’t online at all! Are they in local networking groups and book clubs? Are they involved in charity work or the PTA? Knowing where your ideal client spends their time helps you meet them exactly where they are at and will most likely to see what they need when they need it!

What Do They Like (and Dislike)?

To truly connect with your clients, you need to understand what drives them, and that understanding is like having the key to their heart. What do they deeply value? What irritates them? What excites them? What helps or hurts them and their business? What kind of messaging grabs their attention? Are they drawn to direct, no-fluff communication, are they data driven, or do they appreciate a slower, more narrative, story-driven approach?

For instance, a corporate executive looking for consulting services may prefer data-driven insights and case studies, while a small business owner might resonate more with personal success stories and actionable tips. By tailoring your content to their preferences, you’re not just speaking their language—you’re building trust and rapport, which leads to loyalty and referrals.

The ‘How To’ Answers Itself

By now, you’ve realized that the answer to “How do I find clients?” is already unfolding. It starts by understanding your ideal client, knowing where to find them, and learning how to connect with them. This understanding provides the framework for your entire marketing plan.

When you know who you’re serving, the ‘how’ becomes clear—you’re creating content that appeals, marketing in spaces they frequent, and offering solutions to the problems they’re actively seeking to solve.

Your Framework for success

Think of your answers as the blueprint for building a robust marketing plan. If you know your client loves in-depth blog posts, start a blog. If they’re active on Instagram, create eye-catching visual content. If they’re in local networking groups, show up and connect.

This process is not about guessing; it’s about strategic decisions backed by knowledge and every strategic decision will be more effective because it’s built on real insights about who you serve.
